Hillary Clinton makes history with presidential nomination

Barack Obama at 2016 Democratic National Convention Hillary Clinton makes history with presidential nomination

Some Texas women at the Democratic National Convention reacted with emotion last night as Hillary Clinton became the first woman in the country to lead a major political party's ticket. Seeing this fellow woman, with whom I share the experience of surviving a culture, a government and an economy that treats women as 70 cents to a man's dollar.it felt like something broken inside me spontaneously mended.

Her nomination as the Democratic presidential candidate is both a milestone for America and a reflection of how our country lags politically. Originally from the Netherlands, she moved to the U.S. in 2001 and recently gained citizenship.

Local historian Rhonda Chalfant said that while some European countries have already placed women in charge, America has been "a little slow", although she said the country has come quite far from where it stood nearly 100 years ago when women gained the right to vote in 1920.

Wednesday night featured President Obama, Joe Biden and vice-presidential nominee Timothy M. Kaine but also included former congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, abortion rights leader Ilyse Hogue, and Stephanie Schriock, from Emily's List. She said Clinton is paving the way for other females and to further equal rights for women.

PHILADELPHIA-It was hard to imagine that Bill Clinton could make as powerful a speech on behalf of his wife as he did on behalf of Barack Obama four years ago. By 1968, she had switched camps to support the presidential campaign of Democratic candidate Eugene McCarthy, and later the 1972 campaign of Democratic candidate George McGovern. But she totally got that it was a big moment, that the woman on the screen was doing something incredibly important, and that it was something she could be proud of.

And when she does, there's one question that comes up again and again. She believes Clinton's nomination is a victory for African-American women. "So the Russians are going to be very wary of her, and a lot will depend on what's happening in Russia when the new American president takes office". It seemed to especially hit home when used as criticism of the Republican Party and its presidential nominee, Donald Trump.

Wearing white, Clinton said she and all Americans clearly know what the country is up against.

I disagree. I think there are two groups of people who say "Yes, but".

Delegate Audrey Tyson, who co-chairs New Haven's Ward 29 Democratic Committee and serves on the City Plan Commission, said she's always been a Hillary supporter.

"President Obama has really thrown the book at these asylum seekers coming here, and enforced a very aggressive practice of detaining families, putting them into very rapid deportation policies and practices to get them out of the country", says Greg Chen, director of advocacy at the American Immigration Lawyers Association (AILA). "Your cause is our cause", she said. But if a woman walks into the voting booth and pulls that lever for Hillary Clinton just because she's a woman, that right there I think is sexist.

Harp recalled how Fudge came to New Haven prior to the CT primary to get out the vote for the Clinton campaign.

However, other newspapers got around that by featuring past images of Hillary Clinton, or using photos of women in the crowd at the DNC, such as the New York Times, which chose an image of three women cheering with a "Girl Power" sign. She looked up at me and said, 'Ms.
