Russian doping whistleblower Yuliya Stepanova won't appeal her Rio 2016 ban

Jan Ortega | 06 August, 2016, 00:22

Some Ukrainian team members said the ruling was weighed against the Russians because the International Olympic Committee allowed U.S. athletes who had previously served time out for doping to compete in Rio.

Isinbayeva can no doubt count on the votes from Russia's diminished team in Rio but she may struggle for support elsewhere, given her high-profile campaign against Russia's punishment for systemic and widespread doping.

The exclusion of almost a third of Russia's athletes for their ties to a government-sanctioned doping program was a blow to the integrity of the Olympics and will severely diminish Russia's presence across several sports here.

Speaking to the Russian team before they left for Rio last week, Putin said Russia's Olympic ambitions had fallen victim to a politically-motivated plot.

But Elena Zamolodchikova, a two-time gymnastics gold medallist, said Russian Federation was determined to finish top-10 on the medals table, a position they have occupied since the 1950s. "I hope that isn't happening, we believe in the best", Karnaukh said.

"Considering the fact that Europe gears up for the qualification round ahead of the (2018) World Cup, we chose to meet their requests", Mutko, who is also the president of the Russian Football Union (RFU), told journalists. "Now all athletes are much stronger".

The International Olympic Committee was to announce its final figure for the Russian squad later on Thursday. Russia's entire track and field team - 67 athletes - has been completely banned following an earlier decision by the International Association of Athletics Federations.

But the precise number of Russian athletes in that parade, and on hand for these Summer Games, was a moving target 24 hours before their official opening, as individual sports federations were still determining which Russian athletes will be cleared to compete.

The upcoming Olympic Games will begin under a weight of issues.

Most of the swimming team was allowed to compete (only five of the 35 were banned).

While attention has been focused on Russia's Olympics teams, The Times on Friday reported WADA's condemnation of the Brazilian team's Olympics preparation.

Among 31 swimmers accepted are Vladimir Morozov and Nikita Lobintsev, who were initially banned.

So, which sports are Russians banned from, and which are they allowed into?

Russian Federation will now have a smaller delegation of athletes than 11 other countries, including Italy and Spain.

"Starting with Rio the sanctioning of doping cases at the Olympic Games will not be done anymore via the IOC, but it will be handled independently by the Court of Arbitration for Sport", the IOC president added.
