Amid Trump Attacks, Abbott Defends Fallen Muslim Soldier's Family

RepublicanSenator John McCain slammed Donald Trump on Monday for disparaging the Muslim family of a slain American soldier, and demanded that his party's presidential candidate set an example for the country.
At last week's Democratic Convention, Pakistan-born Khizr Khan told the story of his son who was posthumously awarded a Bronze Star and Purple Heart after he was killed in Iraq in 2004.
"The comments about Mrs. Khan because she didn't speak on stage, that seemed very cruel", she said. The Republican leaders defended the soldier's family without mentioning Trump by name.
Sen. Charles Grassley of Iowa said Trump's comments "are not in line with my own beliefs about how the members of the military and their families should be treated".
Trump said he refused to endorse McCain, a prisoner of war in Vietnam, for not doing enough for veterans. His sacrifice - and that of Khizr and Ghazala Khan - should always be honoured. Mr Khan said his son would not have been in America if it had been up to Mr Trump, who has called for a ban on Muslims from entering the US.
His statement also caused many in the Republican Party tocondemn him.
Democratic pollster Paul Maslin said that while "ninety-nine percent of me says this is devastating for Trump", Clinton backers can't assume that another few days of bad headlines will sink a candidate who "simply defies all natural laws of American politics". "Don't forget, last time he said I would never get the nomination, now he's saying I wouldn't get the election now all of the sudden he said the other day maybe I can win the election".
Nevertheless, Collins - the first House Republican to endorse Trump and a lawmaker who has said he would consider serving as Commerce secretary in Trump's administration - stood by his man.
The list also says Trump had not directly compared his sacrifices to the Khans. "So for me to hear Donald Trump malign my hero - my son's hero - it is just mind-boggling".
Trump's criticism of the Khans is part of a familiar pattern for the Republican nominee: He can't let go of a perceived slight, no matter the potential damage to his presidential campaign or political reputation.
The back and forth between Trump and the grieving Gold Star family has continued into this week, leading many Republicans to rebuke Trump.
Republican Chris Christie, a Trump ally once viewed by Trump as a potential running mate, joined the fray on Tuesday, calling criticisms of the Khan family "inappropriate".
On Sunday, Democratic rival Clinton said Trump had scapegoated the parents. John McCain, who Khan says was a source of encouragement for him during his son's deployment. And had they won, I would have been disappointed, but I would have said to all Americans, they are-this is our president, and I know they're going to abide by certain norms and rules and common sense.
Trump, who secured the Republican presidential nomination during his party's convention two weeks ago, remained defiant Tuesday. Pence added that he and Trump "have different styles", which shouldn't be "confused with differences in conviction".

He said consumers can easily sign up for health coverage when they're sick, and then jump off after health services are paid for. Aetna joins a growing list of health insurance companies that are struggling to make money from the new law.
But it is a strong sign that there are plenty within the Democratic Party who are unhappy with Clinton as the nominee. Farner had just made a rubbing of the name of his cousin, Calvin Wilson, who was killed in action in February 1967.
However, Azerbaijan is well-known for its efforts in the Greco-Roman wrestling event and has won medals at every Games since 1996. The Olympic medal count is a fun way to get excited about the games and stay into them through the two-plus weeks.
There have been reports that Fletcher and Rodgers were simply pretending that they are a couple for the sake of publicity. He added that he would love to see James Taylor or Wells Adams "get a shot at finding that special person as well".
