Earth sets temperature record for third straight year

All three sets of data reveal that the planet's average surface temperature has risen by 1.1C (2F) since the late 19th century.

This means 16 of the 17 hottest years have all occurred during this century, with 1998 the only outlier.

This represents long-term warming along with the short-term effects of the El Nino weather phenomenon, he explains, predicting that the streak of breaking records will probably end this year as those El Nino effects dissipate.

Scientists believe that the temperature record announced Wednesday and other recent ones are nearly certainly caused mainly by human-driven climate change, due to greenhouse gas emissions.

During 2016, the globally-averaged sea surface temperature was 1.35°F (0.75°C) above the 20 century average.

"It was really global warmth that we saw in 2016", Derek Arndt, chief of the monitoring branch at NOAA's National Centers for Environmental Information, said in a news briefing. The previous trio - 1939 through 1941 - don't rank within the top 30 warmest years on record, he noted.

President-elect Donald Trump has professed open-mindedness about climate change. Clearly, the steady increase in atmospheric, man-made greenhouse gas concentration is playing the lead role.

Since measurement methods get transformed over the passage of time, there were bound to be hitches on the way to an accurate portrayal of the global temperatures.

In Chiefs-Steelers, revenge is in eye of the beholder
And, of course, grizzled veteran Ben Roethlisberger is at the QB controls for the Steelers and has had another remarkable season. The 29-point deficit was one of the season's biggest blowout defeats suffered by a team that eventually made the playoffs.

Each of the first eight months of the year "had record high temperatures for their respective months", NOAA said.

What's more, according to NOAA, not a single land area on the planet was cooler than average a year ago.

And the pollution certainly is behind the long-term trend toward warming, scientists say.

Past year was the end of an El Nino weather pattern, so 2017 is expected to be cooler rather than warmer.

The European Commission's Copernicus Climate Change Service (C3S) also published data at the beginning of the month confirming 2016 as the warmest year on record, almost 0.2ºC warmer than 2015. But among all those high temperatures, the most surprising are the huge temperature jumps recorded in the Arctic.

Temperature deviations from the 1951-1980 average by decade through 2016.

As for 2017-it'll be another warm one.

The average Antarctic sea ice extent for the year was 4.31 million square miles, the second smallest annual average since record-keeping began in 1979. Weather, while related to climate, is affected by regional and local conditions. WMO 2016 was an extreme year for the global climate and stands out as the hottest year on record.
