'Net Neutrality' Foe Ajit Pai Is New FCC Head

By appointing Ajit Pai last January 23 as chairman of the Federal Communications Commission, he seems intent on eliminating key regulations that the agency has established under the Barack Obama administration. A move not requiring Senate confirmation since Commissioner Pai was already confirmed to the agency in 2012 as a Commissioner nominated by Former President Obama. Pai, a Republican, will initially lead an FCC with a 2-to-1 Republican majority.

Sen. Maria Cantwell, D-Wash., released a letter to President Trump criticizing his appointment of Pai. And I am optimistic that we will look back on today's vote as an aberration, a temporary deviation from the bipartisan path that has served us so well.

"On the day that the Title II [net neutrality] Order was adopted, I said that 'I don't know whether this plan will be vacated by a court, reversed by Congress, or overturned by a future Commission". But with Republicans now in control of the FCC, Pai's prediction that the policy's "days are numbered" may very well come true.

Turns out, he's nearly certainly right.

A native of Parsons, Kan., Pai, who is 44, graduated with honors from Harvard University in 1994 and from the University of Chicago Law School in 1997.

Thune said the fear of a complete repeal of the FCC's net neutrality rule might bring Democrats on board with his push for a legislative solution.

In a survey to be officially released on Wednesday, conducted by information technology industry experts Spiceworks, 82 percent of IT professionals working in the USA were in favor of current net neutrality regulations. Under the Trump administration, this is bound to change radically.

The alliance also cuts short the role of former Delhi chief minister Sheila Dikshit, named by the Congress as its CM candidate. Meanwhile, Uttar Pradesh is all set for seven-phased election from Feb 11 for 403 seats.

Public Knowledge, a consumer advocacy group, said Pai had a "history of attacking consumer protections" and urged him to keep the FCC's recent initiatives intact.

While the official announcement is still pending, it now seems that conservative Commissioner Ajit Pai will take over for Tom Wheeler as chairman of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC).

He worked as a Verizon associate from 2001 to 2003 and later worked as a staffer at the DOJ, Senate, and the FCC.

The designation of Pai, a sitting commissioner, allows the new administration to hit the ground running in the telecommunications area, a huge and dynamic part of the economy.

Pai will also have a key role in deciding whether to approve or reject or impose conditions on mergers involving cable and telephone companies. And he has opposed broadband privacy regulation.

Pai is a notorious enemy of net neutrality, and has indicated that he will work to reverse the relatively new net neutrality rules as chairman.

In his interview on Reason TV, Pai said that building out the nuts and bolts of the internet was a pretty tough thing and that if the "regulatory system second-guesses you every step of the way, regulates the rates etc. then, you are going to have the European situation".
