The victims of a deadly stabbing in Wolverhampton were the mother and the sister of the knifeman, who later turned his blade on himself, police said.

Medics treated "a number of patients" after the domestic-related attack on Wednesday morning.

Ann-Marie James, 33, was stabbed in the chest at a flat in Wolverhampton by Melvin James, West Midlands Police said.

Police said they used stun grenades to storm the flat and detain the knifeman.

West Midlands officers used stun grenades to break into the property in the Merry Hill area of Wolverhampton after getting a call around 9.45am.

Two police officers also received treatment, although neither was seriously hurt.

Another woman, in her 50s, was taken to hospital with critical stomach wounds.

"It's a really shocking incident and our sympathy goes out to friends and families of those involved".

The IPCC said it had sent investigators to the scene.

"Our investigators are now busy conducting initial inquiries to gather a full picture of the police involvement in what unfolded".

Post-mortems will take place later this week.

"The Midlands Air Ambulances from Cosford, Strensham and Staffordshire were all sent to the scene along with three land ambulances, three paramedic officers and the West Midlands Care Team Doctor".
