HBO is keen to relive the drama surrounding the 2016 presidential election.

Back in 2012, HBO and director Jay Roach offered up a four-years-later post-mortem on the 2008 presidential election-and specifically the effects that dark horse vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin wrecked upon it-in the form of the TV movie Game Change.

HBO is set to chronicle the events of the recent presidential election, much as they did in 2012 telepic Game Change - only this time it will be expanded to a miniseries.

Director Jay Roach, who helmed Game Change, is onboard to direct this new miniseries, and Tom Hanks and Gary Goetzman also return as executive producers.

The new Game Change book (no official title yet) is slated for early 2018, with the mini-series to follow. It snagged three Golden Globes and five Primetime Emmy Awards, among others. HBO clearly feels Trump's controversial run, marked by outrageous moves and scandals, needs more expansive treatment in a miniseries format vs. a movie like Game Change.

It remains to be seen whether Alec Baldwin will pick up his toupée to play Trump again - we can only hope.

Another Clinton-based series in the offing, with a third season of FX's "American Crime Story" expected to focus on former President Bill Clinton's sex scandal with Monica Lewinsky.

Halperin and Heileman have built a considerable industry based on their reporting about recent elections, including Showtime's "The Circus: Inside the Greatest Political Show on Earth".

Per HBO, this will also mark the reunion of Halperin and Heilemann with Tom Hanks and Gary Goetzman, who will both serve as executive producers of this mini.
