She added: "The SNP is trying to force the UK Government to agree to something that is fundamentally unfair to the Scottish people".
Sturgeon is by no means guaranteed of winning a referendum just 2-1/2 years after Scots voted to keep the union, but she has managed to put pressure on May just days before Britain is expected to trigger Article 50 of the EU's Lisbon Treaty and start the formal divorce procedure.
Sturgeon said: "You can go round and round and round in this circle if you want".
For the SNP this argument about who has the right to decide when or if Scotland can have another referendum is an example of why Scotland should leave the UK.
In her interview with STV News, Ms Sturgeon insisted she would "continue to pursue the path" she had set out when she announced plans to win the backing of MSPs to request a Section 30 order from Westminster.
A day after Theresa May said she would refuse to give her permission for a legally-binding repeat of 2014's vote until long after the United Kingdom has left the European Union, feeling are running high in Aberdeen. So, will she talk about holding a vote in the future?
She was speaking as a leading academic suggested Westminster could still have to negotiate with the Scottish Government if it stages a consultative referendum.
Speaking at the event, Scotland in Union chief executive Graeme Pearson said: "I'm here today to say independence is not inevitable".
Pressed further, he said: "What we will do, is, we will discuss this issue with the Scottish parliament, we will debate it in the course of this week, we will get to the conclusion of that debate. So I'm up for continued discussions".
Downing Street has rejected the suggestion that the SNP could hold a legal vote without Mrs May's approval.
"Alternatively, the legislation could be challenged in court by a third party after it received Royal Assent".
"A section 30 order can therefore only be made if the UK Government, UK Parliament and Scottish Parliament are all agreed".
"It would be entirely unacceptable for a similar approach not to be taken if there ends up being another referendum".
The SNP would refuse to nominate a successor and hope the Scottish Green party, which holds the balance of power at Holyrood, would refuse to support a ruling coalition involving Labour, the Tories or the Lib Dems able to take over.
Theresa May has said the UK Government will block a referendum and has indicated that a second poll will not be considered until the UK has secured a Brexit deal.
