Industry groups eager for Dakota Access oil flow

Jan Ortega | 30 March, 2017, 00:56

Energy Transfer Partners calls the decision politically motivated and accuses President Barack Obama's administration of delaying the matter until he leaves office.

The delays cost the pipeline company more than $500 million, according to an AP estimate, and the tribes have sought to intensify the financial damage by urging banks and investors to pull their funding from the project.

An American Indian activist accused of inciting a riot during protests against the Dakota Access oil pipeline in North Dakota has pleaded not guilty.

ETP did not reveal when it foresaw the pipeline becoming operational, but did say that it now has oil underneath a Missouri River reservoir in North Dakota.

"My people are here today because we have survived in the face of the worst kind of challenges", Cheyenne River Sioux Tribal Chairman Harold Frazier stated Monday in response to Energy Transfer Partners' announcement. But he and Phillip Ellis, spokesman for the Earthjustice environmental law nonprofit, which is representing that tribe, said they are confident in the court case. "The fact that oil is flowing under our life-giving waters is a blow, but it hasn't broken us".

A few weeks after Trump's DAPL order, the water protectors were evicted from the Oceti Sakowin camp on the Standing Rock Sioux reservation, and they ceremonially burned their camp in protest.

The pipeline also will mean property tax revenue to counties and the state government in South Dakota.

Dakota Access has always been a source of contention given its proximity to tribal lands in and around North Dakota.

ETP wrapped up construction on the pipeline this month after receiving permission from the US government in February for the Lake Oahe work, which had been held up several months by protests and the legal dispute.

Chase Iron Eyes and 73 others were arrested February 1 after setting up teepees on land that authorities say is owned by the pipeline developer.

The pipeline company has insisted that the state-of-the-art pipeline is safe, while the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has noted that a 30-year-old natural gas pipeline runs along the same route at Lake Oahe.
