Kansas outcome a warning to GOP as Georgia contest nears

Lance Thomas | 16 April, 2017, 02:08

"Republicans in the era of Trump have a problem even with Trump voters in the suburbs", said Jesse Ferguson, a former strategist for the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee.

But in Estes' victory there are warning signs for Republicans preparing for the first midterm election of the Trump presidency in 2018. Pompeo cruised to re-election in November with 61 percent of the vote.

In this March 23, 2017, photo, Democrat James Thompson, a candidate for Kansas' 4th Congressional District, speaks during a debate in Wichita, Kan. A win is a win, but underwhelming it was.

Well, pundits who predicted Mr. Estes' loss, if there were any, were wrong.

Democrats tapped into voter frustration after Brownback made Kansas a laboratory for sweeping tax cuts that left the state short of revenue and facing a budget crisis. Despite a large field of candidates, Democrats have rallied to Jon Ossoff, who raised $8.3 million during the first quarter of the year and is leading in the polls. Their party is fired up.

The fourth congressional district - like most of the surrounding area in south central Kansas - is rock-solid Republican.

But do you really expect this president to glean any lessons from Tuesday? The seat, which Pompeo won with almost 61 percent of the vote in November, looked until recently like a lock for Estes, the state treasurer since 2011. Vice President Mike Pence did likewise.

Readers of the liberal blog Daily Kos also were jumping into the race, donating more than $200,000 to Thompson in the final days.

The TV portion of the campaign includes a 30-second spot highlighting Ossoff's support for the Affordable Care Act (ACA), contrasting that with the unsuccessful American Health Care Act (AHCA). And it will galvanize Democrats' candidate-recruitment efforts for next year's campaign.

Estes is the state treasurer. It had him gloating that national prognosticators had his race wrong. Located in the middle of the country, they often act as a signpost, revealing how people in the United States feel about politics and where the country is headed.

Not entirely, Mr. Estes. While Republicans were exaggerating, Democrats were doing what they too often do: blaming Republicans for effectiveness Democrats can't seem to replicate. His public service career began when he served two terms as treasurer of Sedgwick County, which is home to Wichita. Aside from the confirmation of Neil Gorsuch to the Supreme Court, congressional Republicans have very little to take to their voters as proof that they have delivered. Estes struggled to explain himself, and his TV spot that showed him standing in a swamp backfired.

The civil rights attorney said he was inspired by Sen. It nearly worked for Thompson.

"Due to the failure of House Republicans to pass repeal and replace, we have not proven we can transform ourselves from an opposition party to a governing party", said the GOP House member. "It took a president of the United States, the vice president, the speaker of the House, a senator coming into our state and a bunch of lies to drum up a vote".
