After Marches, Trump Wonders Why People Still Want to See His Taxes

Lance Thomas | 17 April, 2017, 00:32

Thousands of sign-waving, chanting protesters have marched through streets across America demanding that President Donald Trump release his tax returns. Trump also tweeted Sunday.

President Donald Trump says "someone should look into who paid" for the rallies around the country Saturday that urged him to release his tax returns.

Trump had not released his tax returns during the presidential campaign a year ago and had said that he would release them after they went through audit.

"I did what was an nearly impossible thing to do for a Republican - easily won the Electoral College!"

In a Quinnipiac University poll released on April 4, more than two-thirds of the respondents said Trump should publicly release his tax returns. Mr. Trump tweeted before following up seven minutes later with accusations about the protests themselves. "The election is over", he tweeted.

The figure - seen by some as the unofficial mascot for the protest - apparently meant to suggest that the Republican president was afraid, or chicken, to publish his tax records.

He described Trump's refusal to release his taxes as being "like a teenager trying to hide a lousy report card".

Back in January, the Trump administration tried to quietly put the issue under the rug when White House advisor Kellyanne Connway told ABC News Trump would not release his tax returns because voters "didn't care." Numerous protests featured an inflatable chicken, a mascot of sorts for the march, in a bid to mock Trump's unwillingness to share his returns.

In Washington, D.C., one of Trump's sharpest critics in the House spoke to protesters at the U.S. Capitol just before they set off on their march to the National Mall. In south Florida, activists marched to Trump's Mar-a-Lago resort, where the president is staying over the weekend.

During the campaign trail, President Trump promised to release his tax returns but after 86 days in office, he has yet to do so.

Most of the demonstrations proved peaceful, but in Berkeley, Calif., police arrested 13 people and confiscated knives and makeshift weapons after fistfights broke out between Trump opponents and supporters.

"We do care. We want to see his taxes", said Ann Demerlis, who was among hundreds who marched in Philadelphia.

Two of the biggest Tax rallies took place in NY and Los Angeles, where witnesses said about 5,000 people were present in each cities, demanding the president to release his taxes.

Trump's break with precedent has raised questions about possible conflicts of interest. Trump has repeatedly said he has used legal loopholes to minimize his tax burden.
