Texas governor signs law banning Sanctuary cities

Roland Mccarthy | 09 May, 2017, 06:53

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott signed a "sanctuary cities" ban into law on Facebook Live Sunday night.

Abbott signed the bill on Facebook without prior notice, the Associated Press reports.

Texas lawmakers passed the anti-sanctuary city measure at the urging of Republicans shortly after a USA judge blocked implementation of President Donald Trump's executive order yanking federal funds from cities that don't fully comply with US government demands on immigrants who could face deportation over even minor offenses.

The bill allows police to ask for the immigration status of anyone they detain and threatens sheriffs with jail time if they don't cooperate with federal authorities. "MALDEF will not stand idle while the state tacitly encourages racial profiling and discrimination".

He added that elected officials and law enforcement agencies "don't get to pick and choose which laws they will obey".

Senate Bill 4, sponsored by Sen.

"They did not connect the history of our culture or how closely that it is tied to Mexico", the Democratic state representative Eddie Rodriguez said. The law takes effect on September 1.

However, last month a court blocked his executive order to deny cities harboring undocumented immigrants billions of dollars in federal funding.

Texas has taken the unusual step of preemptively suing to stop lawsuits challenging its new "sanctuary cities" ban.

Abbott's comments came during an exclusive interview with Breitbart Texas immediately following his signing of the historic bill that effectively outlaws sanctuary jurisdictions in the Lone Star State.

While the new law doesn't require police to ask about someone's immigration status, police departments can't stop their officers from asking. But it does allow Texas police to inquire whether a person is in the country legally, even if they're not under arrest.

"Texas strongly supports the legal immigration that has been a part of our state from our very beginning".

Every major police chief in Texas opposed the bill, KVUE-TV reported.

The Texas measure has been compared to Arizona's 2010 immigration law, SB1070. "But legal immigration is different from harboring people who have committed risky crimes", Governor Greg Abbott said.

The law will undoubtedly be challenged in court by groups like the American Civil Liberties Union, who issued a statement Sunday.

Texas doesn't now have any sanctuary cities.

On Sunday, Gov. Abbott told viewers the key policies on the Texas bill had already been tested and approved by the U.S. Supreme Court.

Travis County Sheriff Sally Hernandez said it was "unfortunate that fear and misinformation" enabled the law the pass.

The law criminally and financially sanctions cities, counties and college campuses that adopt any policies which ignore federal detainers and prevent police from enforcing immigration laws.
