The Idaho Republican quietly filed initial paperwork for the job Tuesday morning, The Spokesman-Review reported, and announced his plans soon after. "Idaho needs a strong leader who will make government fair for everyone", Labrador said in a prepared statement, adding he will make a formal announcement of his candidacy in a few weeks.

Labrador is one of the founding members of the House Freedom Caucus, and in 2014 he ran for majority leader, losing to Rep. Kevin McCarthy.

The conservative politician stumbled into controversy shortly after the vote, when he defended his position at a town hall in his district and said: "Nobody dies because they don't have access to health care".

Labrador was one of many legislators who initially opposed the American Health Care Act, the bill supported by President Donald Trump and House Speaker Paul Ryan to repeal and replace parts of Obamacare.

Earlier this week, Labrador appeared on national media headlines when he said his answer to a question on health care at a recent town hall in northern Idaho "wasn't very elegant".

Labrador joins a crowded GOP field in the race to succeed retiring Gov.

A Labrador candidacy sets up a high-profile Republican gubernatorial primary in May 2018, pitting the congressman against Lieutenant Governor Brad Little and businessman Tommy Ahlquist, who have already begun their campaigns. "The congressman will bring his experience in Washington, D.C.to the race, and I am excited to continue sharing my conservative message of building an even better Idaho with a fresh approach and new ideas". The lone Democratic candidate is a homeless man in jail.

The current governor, Butch Otter, is a three-term Republican and is not limited by the state's Constitution from winning another term. "Idahoans, including myself, look forward to hearing from Congressman Labrador about the accomplishments he has made while being in Congress for more than six years".
