China's Xi urges restraint on N. Korea in call to Duterte

Roland Mccarthy | 11 May, 2017, 07:56

President Trump once again showed his predilection for strongmen dictators who operate by their own law, often to murderous results, when he spoke to Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte Saturday and invited him to the White House. Additionally, a case against the Philippine president (and other officials) was recently filed at the International Criminal Court.

Reports emerged Sunday that Trump extended the invitation without first consulting the State Department.

Duterte started his controversial drug war soon after taking office in June 2016. In a telephone call, Trump also affirmed America's alliance and friendship with the Philippines and its president, who has maintained an antagonistic stance toward US security policies.

On Monday, Duterte suggested he may be too "tied up" to visit Washington.

He followed it up by criticizing the administration's approach to North Korea, calling Trump's goading of Kim Jong Un a bad idea, and claiming that part of his call with the American president over the weekend was to school him in foreign policy.

Duterte's term has been marked with accusations of human rights violations. "The number-one concern of this president is to make sure that we do everything we can to protect our people and specifically to economically and diplomatically isolate North Korea".

"It doesn't mean that human rights don't matter", a Trump aide sought to clarify.

But Duterte said Monday that he was unable to commit to the White House visit, reported Agence France-Presse. The US has been interested in trying to restore the Philippines' military dependence on them, amid Duterte's talk of having deals with Russian Federation and China too.

In the world of diplomacy, an invitation to the White House is more than a friendly gesture.

A USA -based human rights group says President Donald Trump should seek accountability and not offer to roll out the White House red carpet for Philippine leader Rodrigo Duterte, who the group accuses of being a mass murder "mastermind" amid the thousands of deaths in his anti-drug crackdown.

Last September, Duterte said, "Even if I wanted to, I can not kill them all", of his campaign promise to eradicate illegal drugs within six months.

The Philippines president has also been accused of encouraging civilians to kill people attempting to buy or sell drugs. "I am supposed to go to Russian Federation, I am supposed to go to Israel", he said, when asked about Mr Trump's invitation made in a telephone call on Saturday.

Southeast Asian leaders, in a joint statement, said the escalation of tensions between USA and North Korea "can affect the peace and stability in the entire region".
