Trump Creates Panel To Investigate Voter Fraud

Roland Mccarthy | 13 May, 2017, 03:59

Kansas Sec. of State Kris Kobach will be the number two man on President Donald Trump's new commission to review voter fraud behind Vice President Mike Pence. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they weren't authorized to discuss details ahead of the formal announcement. The Republican won the White House through victory in the Electoral College, which tallies wins in states, but lost the popular vote to Democratic rival Hillary Clinton by some 3 million ballots.

"The commission will also include individuals with knowledge and experience in election management and voter integrity", White House Deputy Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee-Sanders said on Thursday at the White House daily press briefing.

The White House said the commission will review practices that affect the integrity of federal elections-spanning improper registrations, improper voting, fraudulent registrations, fraudulent voting and voting suppression.

Mr Trump won the presidency with an Electoral College victory despite losing to Mrs Clinton by almost three million votes.

"President Trump is trying to create a distraction from actual threats to our democracy, such as ongoing voter suppression and Russia's interference in the 2016 election", said Kristen Clarke of the Lawyers' Committee for Civil Rights.

Read Friday's Arkansas Democrat-Gazette for full details. Days after his inauguration, Trump took to Twitter calling for a "major investigation into VOTER FRAUD", saying that depending on the results of the investigation, "we will strengthen up voting procedures!"

In a lunch meeting with senators in February, Trump said that he and former Republican Sen. He noted that it came in the aftermath of Trump's firing of FBI Director James Comey on Tuesday.

Trump had previously identified Pence as the person to oversee the commission.

Mr Kobach advised Mr Trump's transition team and has been a leading GOP proponent of tighter voting regulations.

"President Trump says this commission is an effort to protect voting rights but it is really an effort to suppress and intimidate African-American and other minority voters", said Richmond in a statement.

Trump pledged in late January to strengthen the government's ability to protect its computer networks, but then canceled plans to sign an executive order on cybersecurity without explanation. It commissions reports to assess the country's ability to withstand an attack on the electric grid and to spell out the strategic options for deterring adversaries in cyberspace. USA intelligence officials have said they fully expect that Russians will attempt to hack future US elections, after their attempts to influence last year's vote.

The executive order also does not address offensive cyber operations, which are generally classified. Nor does it spell out what type of cyberattack would constitute an "act of war" or what response the attack would invite.
