What occurred was an "indiscriminate attack across the world on multiple industries and services", Mr Wainwright said, including Germany's rail network Deutsche Bahn, Spanish telecommunications operator Telefonica, US logistics giant FedEx and Russia's interior ministry.

"The numbers are going up".

Wainwright said he was concerned that the numbers of those affected would continue to rise when people returned to work on Monday morning.

Europol says ransomware attack has hit more than 100,000 organizations in 150 countries.

The ransomware has been created to spread between computers and networks automatically with a "worm functionality", which has allowed it to quickly spread across the world.

Microsoft warned governments Sunday against storing computer vulnerabilities like the leaked one at the heart of the cyberattack that has crippled computers in more than 150 countries.

Oliver Gower, of the UK's National Crime Agency, said: "Cyber criminals may believe they are anonymous but we will use all the tools at our disposal to bring them to justice".

Wainwright said he was anxious that the ransomware attack might spread further once people return to work on Monday and log on to their computers.

It said its hospitals had shut down all computer systems as a protective measure and canceled all non-urgent activity.

In China, the internet security company Qihoo360 issued a "red alert" saying that a large number of colleges and students in the country had been affected by the ransomware, which is also referred to as WannaCrypt.

Lieutenant Colonel Ali Niknafas, a commander of the Cyber Police -known as FATA in Iran- called on all users to update their computer and network systems to avoid being affected by the ransomware, called "WannaCry" or "WannaCrypt".

The malware attack first emerged on Friday night but there were concerns of more disruption as workers switch on their computers this morning.

The US and Russian Federation were among scores of countries affected by the virus, which forced Barts Health NHS Trust to cancel appointments and divert ambulances from Whipps Cross Hospital in Leytonstone.

A Jakarta hospital said on Sunday that the cyber virus had infected 400 computers, disrupting the registration of patients and finding records. "There were the same attacks applied to Nissan on Friday and in other areas of the economy and indeed around the world", Fallon said."But let me just assure you, we are spending money on strengthening the cyber defence of our hospital system". Many security firms are already aware of WannaCry in past forms and most are looking at this one right now to see how it might be stopped.

Cybersecurity officials in United Kingdom have applauded a young cyber specialist for helping halt the global ransomware cyber-attack.
