Scientists spot rare gravity waves for the third time

Scientists spot rare gravity waves for the third time Scientists spot rare gravity waves for the third time

It was the third time scientists at LIGO - the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory - have detected the collision of two black holes.

The LIGO Scientific Collaboration is a group of more than 1,000 worldwide scientists who search for cosmic gravitational-wave signals together with the European-based Virgo Collaboration.

More than a year after detecting the first confirmed gravitational waves, researchers were busy at the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-wave Observatory (LIGO) in Livingston, La., upgrading the massive instrument.

Still, at a distance of 1.3 billion light-years, by the time those ripples washed over Earth they'd distorted space on a distance of about a proton.

The third detection was made on January 4 of this year, and is being reported today in a paper accepted for publication in Physical Review Letters. Further, they say that the existence of extra dimensions would leave their mark on the gravitational waves that we measure here on Earth. In addition, each new detection is a chance to test the predictions of general relativity-predictions that can't be tested in a lab. As was the case with the first two detections, the waves-ripples in spacetime-were generated when two black holes collided to form a larger black hole.

The first collision resulted in a single black hole with a mass of around 62 times that of our Sun, while the second resulted in a comparative lightweight, coming in at just 21 solar masses.

In all three cases, each of the twin detectors of LIGO observed gravitational waves from the tremendously energetic mergers of black hole pairs.

The LIGO Scientific Collaboration is an worldwide collaboration whose observations are carried out by twin detectors-one in Hanford, Wash., and the other in Livingston, La. -operated by California Institute of Technology and Massachusetts Institute of Technology with funding from the National Science Foundation. They are triggered by massive celestial objects that crash and merge, setting off ripples through space and across time. The black holes in the first and second detections are located 1.3 and 1.4 billion light-years away, respectively. It involved black holes smaller than the first set but bigger than the second.

LIGO is an worldwide collaboration with members around the globe. The black holes pair up after they sink to the center of a star cluster.

Dynamical capture runs counter to a model called "common envelope evolution", in which binary black holes evolve together, with spins that are aligned with their orbital angular momentum.

They are believed to form when massive stars run out of nuclear fuel at the end of their lives. The answer could help scientists understand the complexities of both stellar and black hole formation. "We're looking forward to making additional binary black hole discoveries in that run, but also the possibility of detections that include matter". The findings also provided insight into the spins of the black holes.

Also, data suggests that at least one of the black holes in this binary system might have been spinning in a direction that is not completely aligned with the orbital rotation of the binary, providing potential clues on how these binaries might have formed. They were predicted by Einstein's theory of gravity, known as general relativity, published just over 100 years ago. Dispersion is what happens when light passes through a prism to create a rainbow. General relativity holds that gravitational waves should be nondispersive-and, indeed, an analysis of the waveform from the newly discovered black-hole merger at different frequencies found no evidence of dispersion, another indication that Einstein had it right.

Gravitational waves provide a kind of "fingerprint" for this spin, explained physicist and LIGO scientist Laura Cadonati of Georgia Tech.

"Gravitational waves are invisible and move very fast, at the speed of light, away from the source of energy that created them", says Ms Sun.

Another co-author Ben Farr, a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Chicago, will join the UO's physics department in September and work on the LIGO team. "UM is proud to be part of this revolution in astronomy and physics".

In the last months of 2015, a group of scientists shocked the world.

Einstein himself wavered on whether gravitational waves existed beyond the math of his own formulas, and he died doubting whether anyone could ever invent a device fine-tuned enough to ever perceive them if they really did exist.

"A squeezed light source will be installed to manipulate the quantum nature of light and make the detectors even more precise measurement devices", she said.

One drawback of having just the two detectors at Hanford, Washington and Livingston, Louisiana tuned to detect gravitational waves is that they can not accurately figure out where in the sky the signal is coming from.
