Trump doubles down on travel ban in early morning tweet storm

US President Donald Trump has called for an "expedited" hearing of his controversial travel ban targeting six Muslim-majority countries, now before the Supreme Court, saying the justice department should seek a "much tougher version". In a string of tweets, Trump lamented that the Justice Department had sent a "watered down, politically correct version" of the order in the appeal to the Supreme Court. Though the courts have shut them down so far, Trump's administration tried to soften the language around it, shooting down the terms "Muslim ban" or "travel ban". Trump tweeted on Monday. The revised order has also been stayed by the judiciary, and the case has now reached the Supreme Court for a final verdict. The president's first attempt was withdrawn by the White House after it was also blocked by the courts. The ACLU posted a tweet Monday afternoon: "Yes, we may incorporate @realDonaldTrump's tweets about the ban into our Supreme Court argument".

His administration should seek a tougher ban, he said, while also asking the courts to move quickly to allow him to install the lighter version.

"In any event we are EXTREME VETTING people coming into the United States in order to help keep our country safe".

On Monday, Trump called the courts "slow and political".

But the government can't ask the court to impose a "much tougher version" than the ban Trump ordered - the justices will be looking at the order that was signed by the president.

These tweets may make some ppl feel better, but they certainly won't help OSG get 5 votes in SCOTUS, which is what actually matters. Sad.

The White House's messaging agenda this week is supposed to be focused on infrastructure policy; however, with the president's statements Monday morning, it is possible the White House may change directions.

Trump argues the ban is crucial for safeguarding American security, and he has intensified his push for it in the wake of the weekend vehicle and knife attack in London that left seven people dead and dozens injured.

Late last week, Justice Department lawyers asked the U.S. Supreme Court to take up the case. Both the original executive order (which included Iraq on its list) and its revised version have been put on hold by courts on the basis that it discriminates against Muslims.

The tweets "are kind of unbelievable", said Justin Cox, an attorney representing International Refugee Assistance Project in the travel ban case now in front of the Supreme Court.

"Ironically, it makes more hard the very thing that Trump was demanding: the reinstatement of his immigration order", Turley said.
