Putin plays down ties with President Trump's ex-adviser Flynn

Lance Thomas | 07 June, 2017, 00:07

Russian President Vladimir Putin testily rejected the idea that his government had interfered in the 2016 US election - or that he is holding compromising evidence against President Donald Trump - in an interview broadcast Sunday night with NBC's Megyn Kelly. "And out of this sensation you created a weapon of war against the president", he said, referring to Trump.

Flynn is one among a number of current and former Trump associates at the center of investigations into whether anyone close to the president helped Russian Federation interfere in the US election, and whether any crimes were committed.

In addition, Putin told NBC that regardless of Trump's previous travel to Russian Federation as a businessman, he had had no relationship with him and had never met him. Right now, I think we have representatives from a hundred American companies that have come to Russian Federation.

While Comey was investigating on the matter of the Russian probe of the recent election campaigning, he was sacked by the president of US Donald Trump. "We have a lot of Americans who visit us", Mr Putin said in an interview with United States television network NBC's Sunday Night with Megyn Kelly.

He also called "a load of nonsense" the idea that Russian Federation has damaging information on President Donald Trump and denies having any relationship with him.

After all, why would anyone think a man who spent years as a KGB foreign intelligence officer might gather information on powerful foreign business leaders when they are in his backyard?

Trump has strongly defended Flynn, saying his former aide was the victim of a witch hunt.

When asked if Trump's son-in-law and White House adviser Kushner discussed setting up a special communications channel with Russian officials, Putin told NBC's Megyn Kelly in an interview on "Sunday Night with Megyn Kelly" that "There's nothing to even talk about".

The interview with Putin - conducted last week during an economic forum in St. Petersburg - was the opening segment in the debut episode of "Sunday Night With Megyn Kelly".

"They [U.S. Intelligence committees] have been misled, and they aren't analyzing the information in its entirety".

"The other thing is that I am deeply convinced that no interference from the outside, in any country, even a small one, let alone in such a vast and great power as the United States, can influence the final outcome of the elections".

He also claimed he had limited personal interaction with former USA national security advisor Michael Flynn. Mark Warner, the top Democrat on the Senate intelligence committee.

"I made my speech".

Instead, Putin took the opportunity to deny every allegation that's been leveled at Russian Federation since the election. Putin also complemented Kelly on her looks, joking he wouldn't be able to talk to her at either event because he would be too busy admiring her. And I got up and left.

"That sums up my entire acquaintance with Mr. Flynn", he concluded. "But you know, I never met with him".

In the NBC interview, Putin was asked about reports of Trump adviser and son-in-law Jared Kushner's attempt to set up a secret communications channel with Russian Federation.
