Sessions, whose contacts with Russia's ambassador to the USA during the presidential campaign has sparked questions, agreed Saturday, June 10, to appear before the Senate intelligence committee as it investigates alleged Russian meddling in the election.

Sessions' testimony is expected to occur Tuesday in a closed meeting and to focus on the moments leading up to the private February 14 conversation where, according to Comey, President Trump pressed the then-FBI director to drop the investigation into former national security adviser Michael Flynn.

Sessions, who recused himself from the Russian Federation probe in March, had been scheduled to testify before the Senate and House Appropriations Subcommittees next week.

Trump is again challenging Comey after the ousted Federal Bureau of Investigation director's testimony before the Senate Intelligence committee last week.

"The Senate Intelligence Committee is the most appropriate forum for such matters, as it has been conducting an investigation and has access to relevant, classified information", Sessions continued.

Sessions, among the earliest high-profile backers of Trump's election campaign, failed to disclose meetings with Russian officials during his January confirmation hearing.

Reed said he was concerned that Sessions had recommended Comey be fired even after he had recused himself from Russia-related matters.

Leahy took to Twitter on Saturday night and Sunday morning to inform Sessions that he can't run forever.

On March 1, The Washington Post reported that he met twice with the Russian Ambassador Sergey Kislyak during the campaign.

"Our judgment was that he was very close and inevitably going to recuse himself", Mr Comey said during the hearing on Thursday.

Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein will replace Sessions at the appropriations committees' hearing Tuesday.

At the time he was dismissed, Mr Comey was also leading a probe into whether Trump campaign advisers colluded with the Russian government to influence the 2016 U.S. election.

During Comey's appearance Thursday before the Senate Intelligence Committee, Sen.

She said Sessions should also testify before the Judiciary Committee, because it was better suited to explore legal questions of possible obstruction.

-Feinstein acknowledged she "would have a queasy feeling, too" if Comey's testimony was true that Loretta Lynch, as President Barack Obama's attorney general, had directed him to describe the FBI probe into Hillary Clinton's email practices as merely a "matter" and to avoid calling it an investigation.

-Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer of NY said he would take Trump up on his offer to testify under oath about his conversations with Comey, inviting the president to testify before the Senate. Comey wrote that Sessions did not reply to his request.
