Oregon DMV To Offer 3rd Gender Identity On ID Cards

Oregon becomes first state to allow nonbinary on drivers license Oregon just became first state to allow residents to identify their gender as non-binary on state ID

In a major victory for people who identify as neither male nor female, OR on Thursday became the first US state to offer a third gender option on state-issued identifications. "And then I'll no doubt stand out front of the building, or sit in the vehicle, and cry".

The state Senate passed a bill which, similarly to the OR legislation, would allow people to choose a third gender on official forms.

According to the Williams Institute at the University of California-Los Angeles, an estimated 20,000 Oregonians identify as transgender - about 0.65 percent of the state's overall population, making it the state with the seventh-highest trans population in the country.

LGBT rights organizations hailed Thursday's move.

The ruling, which is believed to be the first of its kind, allowed Portland resident Jamie Shupe to mark that designation in a standard petition for change of sex. So while Oregon's the first state to allow a third gender option, it likely won't be the last. We know gender is a spectrum and some people don't identify as male or female. "It's something we should do because it's the right thing to do".

Gender identity has become a major flashpoint across the USA in places like North Carolina, which passed a bill forcing students to use toilets according to the sex listed on their birth certificates.

Lambda Legal said that nationally, people have been harassed and even assaulted after presenting IDs to police, hospital workers, employers, airport staff, bank tellers and others that don't match their gender identity or expression.

Australia and New Zealand have already have the option to choose "X" on their passports, and passport applicants in India can pick Male, Female or Eunuch. The state Senate is considering a bill that would allow residents to identify as non-binary on all official state issued documents, including birth certificates. My gender identity is definitely feminine. My gender identity has never been male, but I feel like I have to own up to my male biology. Adding another gender marker to the system may seem small or insignificant to some, but for those who do not identify as binary and have been forced to exist within one on legal documents, finally being officially recognized on their license is a step toward being more recognized in society in general.
