Donald Trump confirms he is under investigation for obstruction of justice

Lance Thomas | 19 June, 2017, 00:05

US President Donald Trump on Friday said that he was being investigated for firing FBI Director James Comey last month. "Sad!" Trump tweeted Friday morning.

Citing Rosenstein's private remarks, ABC News reported that he may have to recuse himself from the investigation, potentially following in the footsteps of Attorney General Jeff Sessions who did so in early March in a move that continues to vex the American president.

In response to the statement, former US Attorney Preet Bharara, whom Trump fired in March, tweeted early Friday morning that "Americans should also exercise caution before accepting as true lies about firing of Federal Bureau of Investigation director & defamation of a war hero special counsel", references to criticisms Trump has levied against Mueller and James Comey.

President Trump could have taken to social media Friday morning to celebrate the two-year anniversary of his presidential campaign announcement and unlikely political rise that followed.

A close Trump associate said this week the president was considering firing Mueller, although the White House later denied it.

Mr Comey, who had been leading one of several Russian Federation inquiries, testified to Congress last week that the president had pressured him to drop an inquiry into links between Mr Flynn and Russian Federation.

Mueller is now leading the investigation into whether Russian Federation interfered in the 2016 presidential election and possible collusion with the Trump campaign. Trump has disputed both claims, saying flatly that he never asked Comey to drop the Flynn probe.

Trump's legal team and surrogates are "building a case for firing Mueller", wrote Richard Painter in a tweet after he appeared on Fox News Saturday.

Mr Rosenstein has said privately he may need to recuse himself from matters relating to the Russian Federation probe because he could become a witness in the investigation, ABC News reported on Friday.

It's been another big week in the investigation into Russian meddling in the US elections.

In early May, on the day Comey was sacked, Rosenstein wrote a scathing memo about the way Comey conducted himself during the Hillary Clinton email investigation. "I hope you can let this go".

In a sign of the newfound seriousness of Mueller's investigation, Vice President Mike Pence's office confirmed that he has hired an attorney to deal with the special counsel investigation.
