According to J.D. Power, the study collected responses from an estimate of 80,000 vehicle purchasers.

Power's 2017 Initial Quality Study (IQS) for the second straight year.

J.D. Power's Initial Quality Study is based on feedback from some 80,000 new vehicle owners and lessees, with a 233-question survey split up into eight different problem categories. "Today, the answer is loud and clear as Kia owns the top spot for the second straight year with more 2017 segment award winners than any other nameplate", said Michael Sprague, chief operating officer and EVP, Kia Motors America. The industry average for the 2017 study is 97 problems per 100 vehicles (PP100), down from 105 a year ago. The largest increases in problems are for cruise control (primarily adaptive cruise); lane departure warning; collision avoidance/alert systems; and blind spot warning. In this year's study, quality improves across seven of the eight categories measured, with 27 of the 33 brands in the study improving their quality compared with 2016. Other brands with strong improvement include Ram, Acura, Volvo, and Ford.

General Motors models that rank highest in their segments are the Chevrolet Silverado; Chevrolet Silverado HD; Chevrolet Sonic; and GMC Terrain. The Audio/Communication/Entertainment/Navigation (ACEN) category has the highest incidence of reported problems of any, scores on average improved pretty significantly since previous year. "For consumers, the great news is that significant improvements are occurring in all model segments, meaning that you don't have to spend a lot of money to get a quality vehicle".

BMW's BMWG.DE Mini was the most improved brand, with owners reporting fewer problems than in 2016.

Hyundai Motor, South Korea's top automaker and Kia's larger affiliate, tied for sixth with BMW and Chevrolet with an 88 PP100.

Ford is delivering new innovations with better quality than average as the industry has faced challenges rolling out new advancements such as connectivity and driver-assist features. Mass-market brands performed better than premium brands for only the third time since 1987, J.D. Power said. Common complaints with new cars were based on "infotainment systems" like voice-recognition setups and key high-tech safety systems.

Toyota's Kyushu 2 plant in Japan, home to the Lexus ES and RX, again takes the platinum award, repeating its score from past year of 15 problems per 100 vehicles.
