Brexit Negotiations Begin! Could the Timing be Any Worse?

Chief Negotiator for Brexit Michel Barnier looks on during a news conference after a European General Affairs Ministers meeting in Brussels Belgium Brexit Negotiations Begin! Could the Timing be Any Worse?

EU leaders should take a firm stance in Brexit negotiations with Britain, according to a poll carried out with citizens from nine major European nations.

Since last year's June 23 referendum result, the sterling has fallen almost 14% against the United States dollar which has resulted in UK inflation nearing a four-year high along with clear signs that Britain's economy is slowing down.

The result of the General Election and Mrs May's loss of authority have led to suggestions that figures such as Chancellor Philip Hammond want the Government's approach to Brexit to focus more on the economy and jobs rather than border controls and leaving the jurisdiction of the European Court of Justice.

Germany's Europe minister, Michael Roth, said in Luxembourg that the opening of the negotiations had shown British leaders still needed a "reality check" on what they could achieve. We have taken the first, critical steps together.

"So we each have to assume our responsibility and the consequences of our decision and the consequences are substantial".

The Mechanical Engineering Industry Association, known by its German initials VDMA, says that that goal of the two-year negotiating process is "damage limitation" because Brexit won't benefit either side.

The UK appears to have bowed down, and accepted the agenda of the European Union as the long-anticipated talks for Brexit, i.e. Britain's exit from the EU, have finally begun. "And use the time in between to work on proposals and exchange them".

"There will be no hostility on my side, I will display a constructive attitude firmly based on the interests and support of the 27".

The conclusions of the first day of negotiations for Brexit have not been well received by British journalists, who accuse their politicians of capitulating before Brussels from the first day.

Brexit secretary David Davis agreed to drop earlier demands he made last week that trade talks should run in parallel with the divorce discussions, an issue that he had promised to turn into "the row of the summer".

"The man is a joker". And it was useful for me to sit down with my counterpart, David Davis. He has been utterly humiliated.

The EU's chief negotiator Michel Barnier said talks with Brexit Secretary David Davis, which are starting a year after Britain's vote to leave, had started "on the right foot".

The Sun, which backed May's centre-right Conservatives in a June 8 election that cost her her parliamentary majority, also noted Davis had gone along with Brussels' plans after saying he would make getting immediate trade talks "the fight of the summer".

Davis gave Barnier an original, French-language account of an expedition to the Himalayas, while Barnier reciprocated with a traditional walking stick from his home region of Savoie. The UK's representatives included just one woman in the nine-strong group, Catherine Webb, director of market access in the Department for Exiting the European Union.
