British royal aides said on Tuesday that Queen Elizabeth and her family provide excellent value for money as accounts showed the amount of taxpayer funds they will get this year will nearly double to cover essential repairs to Buckingham Palace.
The Queen's share of last year's profits will amount to 82.2 million pounds, but she will have to wait until 2019, as her income from the estate is paid two years in arrears.
The Crown Estate, which includes farms and a large portfolio of property in London, posted a rise in profits of 24.7 million pounds - to 328.8 million - in 2016/17, the statement said.
Sir Alan Reid, the Keeper of the Privy Purse, defended those costs on the palace's website Tuesday, arguing that, when divided up, the Sovereign Grant shakes out to 65 pence (about 83 cents) a person. "That against what the queen does and represents for this country, I believe it represents excellent value for money", he said.
Since 2012, the grant has been fixed at 15% of Crown Estate profit, but this was lifted by the government previous year to fund extensive renovations on Buckingham Palace.
But anti-monarchists claimed that the real cost of funding the British royal family totaled more than 440 million US dollars a year.

A ministerial jet converted from an RAF plane to help save money on official trips may have cost more than £150,000 to fly the Prince of Wales and Duchess of Cornwall on their European tour.
The Queen's sovereign grant, the amount she receives from taxpayers, is calculated as a percentage of Crown Estate profits.
The bulk of the Queen's pay bump will go toward renovating Buckingham Palace.
"When our police, [health care system], schools and fire services are struggling", Republic CEO Graham Smith toldCNN Tuesday. "The Queen's official duties should be funded through proper budgeting, working out what's needed not what they can get their hands on".
It also questioned the appropriateness of the increase in the Sovereign Grant given it has already gone up 167 percent since 2012.
