"This is exactly what I mean when I say that mere opposition unity would not serve any objective unless there is an alterantive narrative".

"What I said during party meeting yesterday was in a particular context, don't interpret it differently", said Nitish. "The Opposition parties are trying to create misunderstanding between these two parties which will not be fulfilled", JD (U) leader Ali Anwar told ANI. "I have said earlier also that I am not the PM face of the Opposition in 2019 neither am I eligible", he said.

According to reports, Nitish Kumar had attacked Congress recently, saying it was not he who changed his ideology, but the party.

Lalu, on the other hand, trained guns on Nitish Kumar, saying Bihar chief minister had committed a "historical mistake" by extending support to Kovind. Pointing out that she launched her campaign from the Sabarmati Ashram in Gujarat, Kumar said, "I am carrying forward those values and principles which are sacred to most of my countrymen and women".

Politics over Presidential election 2017 started after Kumar extended his support to the NDA candidate Kovind last month.

The rift within the opposition widened on Monday after Bihar chief minister Nitish Kumar took the parties to task for failing to come up with an alternative narrative to the ascendant Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). "At a function, in the presence of Mr Chidambaram and Rahul Gandhi, I had asked the Congress to take the lead".

Meanwhile, another JD (U) leader K. C. Tyagi said that the RJD and their party are on very good terms and any invitation from them will be accepted by party chief Nitish Kumar. "There is no threat to Mahagathbandhan", said Chief Minister Nitish Kumar putting an end to the speculation of a split.

He also expressed his views on much-hyped Presidential elections which also drew for him ire of the allies for supporting NDA's candidate Ram Nath Kovind. "I can not be", he said, adding, "Have you so far that someone whose name is talked about for something gets it?"

On Opposition unity, the JD (U) leader said: "Coalition is not the only thing, we need to set alternative agenda and set it before the people..." They believe it will help the Congress's revival in the state, or else, "we won't be able to win even seven seats in the next Assembly elections".
