The damage from a brutal stage took its toll: Porte and Thomas were just two of around 20 riders who crashed on the wet, narrow roads of the Jura.

The last descent of the day with seven climbs saw a terrifying high-speed crash involving Richie Porte, who had been fifth overall but is now out of the race.

Martin remounted but was involved in another crash shortly afterwards, while Porte, widely regarded as the biggest threat to Froome's title defence, received treatment for nearly half an hour at the roadside before being taken away in an ambulance.

However, he suffered his fourth crash of the race on Sunday and was forced to abandon, having suffered a similar fate at the Giro d'Italia earlier this year, when a crash caused by a police bike, also on stage nine, caused injuries which ultimately forced him to withdraw a few days later.

"Normally, a fractured clavicle and pelvis would require four to six weeks´ recovery, providing there are no complications, Testa said".

Porte was given immediate medical assistance by an ambulance and some minutes later hadn't moved.

"He was conscious, it's reassuring, he is being transferred to the hospital", Pommery said.

It meant race leader and reigning champion Chris Froome lost both a key team-mate in Thomas and chief rival in Porte on the same stage.

In addition, Australian Richie Porte's Tour came to an end after he suffered a heavy crash on a descent.

Martin lost more than a minute, as did Movistar's Nairo Quintana, three times a runner-up in the race, while former victor Alberto Contador of Trek Segafredo seems to be out of contention after losing over four minutes.

The numerous crashes led some to question whether the stage was too unsafe.

Tour de France race organisers say Porte, one of the pre-race favourites, was travelling at 72.5km/h when he crashed.

"He (Porte) did it four times before the race, he did it in training, he did it in a race (the Criterium du Dauphine)".
