Tensions High In Jerusalem Over Recent Escalation In Violence

Palestinians fear Israel is trying to retake the holy site of al Aqsa by stealth Palestinians fear Israel is trying to retake the holy site of al Aqsa by stealth

Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas said he has cut off all contact with Israel in the wake of clashes between Muslim worshipers and Israeli police Friday in Jerusalem's Old City.

The detectors are seen by the Palestinians as a violation of the status quo at the Muslim-run compound and an attempt to gain more control over the site.

On Saturday, Israeli police used stun grenades and water cannons to disperse dozens of stone-throwing Palestinians.

London [U.K.], July. 22: Three Palestinians have been killed in Jerusalem amid the increasing protests against new Israeli security measures at a highly sensitive holy site.

Aboul Gheit said that the past days proved that security considerations are not the real motive behind the recent Israeli actions in Jerusalem's Old City and al-Aqsa.

Israeli police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld said four officers were injured in the sporadic clashes and the Palestinian Red Crescent ambulance service said at least 377 protesters had been hurt, some suffering from tear gas inhalation. Israeli security says the detectors are in response to last week's deadly attack at the shrine by three armed Palestinians.

The violence was prompted by Israel's installation of metal detectors at entry points to Al-Aqsa compound in Beit-ul-Muqaddas.

There have been clashes almost daily between Israeli police and protesters at the holy site, which is managed by a Jordanian trust but located on Israeli-administered territory.

Over the phone, the two sides exchanged their evaluation of the situation, emphasizing the importance of stopping further escalation of the situation between Israeli Palestinians and the removal of all restrictions imposed by Israel on Muslims worshipping at Al-Aqsa.

Eli Bin, the head of Israel's rescue service Magen David Adom, said an off-duty soldier next door heard screams, rushed to the home and shot the attacker through a window, according to ABC News.

In protest, thousands of worshipers gathered for Friday prayers at various entrances to the sacred compound.

By contrast, the Red Crescent reported at least 450 Palestinians were wounded in the demonstrations, almost half from tear gas.
