Apple ordered to pay $506 million to Wisconsin university in patent dispute

A judge just ordered it to pay $506 million in patent infringement fines to the licensing department of the University of Wisconsin-Madison. In a separate situation, a judge overturned a jury's ruling in August that Apple has to pay a dubious tech company, often colloquially considered as a "patent troll", $625.6 million.

Yesterday, however, Judge Conley added $272 million to the fine, bringing it up to $506 million. As per the statements of Conley, Apple owes extra damages along with some heavy interest. This patent was originally granted in 1998 by a Computer Science Professor named Gurindar Sohi and spans an important method of improving the overall processor efficiency. The judge says that even after the initial judgment, Apple continued to infringe on the patent thus his reasoning for more than doubling the amount owed.

Unsurprisingly Apple is now looking to appeal Conley's ruling, but so far they have yet to publicly comment on it. Judge Conley ordered Apple to pay almost twice the penalty because the judge says that Apple owed more damages for continuing to infringe on the patent until it expired at the end of 2016. Currently, the Apple spokesperson has refused to give any statements over this issue. Do you think Apple infringed on the patent? Let us wait and watch how things turn up and in whose favor!

The original case covered Apple's use of the invention in its A7, A8 and A8X processors, which are found in devices including the iPhone 5S and the iPad Air 2. Apple is not commenting on the matter, though it's being reported that Apple plans to fight the ruling. Conley said he would not rule in that case until Apple has had an opportunity to appeal the 2015 jury verdict. Its function within a processor is to increase performance and speed by predicting the actions of the user before a command is given to the system.
