Lopez was detained three years ago after protests against Maduro's government and sentenced to more than a decade in prison on charges that include inciting protesters to violence. As and when the Labour Party re-admit him when his suspension period is up, we'll know if they agree.

"Yesterday's illegitimate elections confirm that Maduro is a dictator who disregards the will of the Venezuelan people", Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said.

"They've just taken Leopoldo from the house", Lilian Tintori wrote on Twitter.

"We urge those who were elected to the Constituent Assembly to decline to take office", the release concluded.

Local media posted mobile phone footage of Mr Ledezma, wearing pyjamas, being taken forcibly from his home as a woman shouts "dictatorship!"

Opposition leaders had called for a boycott of the vote, declaring it rigged for the ruling party. "Sanction me as you wish, but the Venezuelan people have chose to be free and I am the independent president of a free nation".

Canada also denounced the Venezuelan government's action in creating the constituent assembly, referring to it as another step down the path to institutionalize authoritarian rule in the country.

Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro claimed victory today (Monday) in the controversial election for a new Constituent Assembly to replace the current legislative body that is comprised of Maduro's opponents. I don't deserve imperialist orders.

The United States stands by the people of Venezuela, and their constitutional representatives, in their quest to restore their country to a full and prosperous democracy.

"If it wasn't a tragedy. if it didn't mean more crisis, the electoral council's number would nearly make you laugh", opposition leader Freddy Guevara said on Twitter. Instead, the Trump administration is considering Russian-type financial sanctions to limit USA companies from trading in sovereign debt on primary or secondary markets.

A spokeswoman for the European Commission said: "A Constituent Assembly, elected under doubtful and often violent circumstances, can not be part of the solution".

He mocked United States criticism that the vote on Sunday was an affront to democracy.

More than eight million Venezuelans voted on Sunday to elect the members of the ANC, who will be charged with drafting a new constitution to bolster social protections and communal programs.

A banner that reads "Maduro, this is not Cuba!"

The constituent assembly will have the task of rewriting the country's constitution and will have powers above and beyond other state institutions, including the opposition-controlled congress. Due to plunging oil prices and widespread corruption and mismanagement, Venezuela's inflation and homicide rates are among the world's highest, and widespread shortages of food and medicine have citizens dying of preventable illnesses and rooting through trash to feed themselves.
