Full transcript leaked of Trump-Turnbull conversation

"You are worse than I am", Trump told the premier in a remark apparently meant as a compliment, the paper reported. "They are not going to be wonderful people who go on to work for the local milk people". I do not know where they find these people to make these stupid deals.

Mr Trump said it was "a frightful deal, a disgusting deal", that would make him look like a "dope" and "a weak and ineffective leader", and he feared the refugees would turn into terrorists who would pull off San Bernardino or World Trade Centre-style terror attacks in the US. At one point, Trump asked, "What is the thing with boats?"

"Putin was a pleasant call", Trump said, referring to his conversation with the Russian leader Vladimir Putin.

"You can not say that to the press", Trump told Pena Nieto according to the transcript of the January 27 call published by the Post on Thursday.

"Malcolm, why is this so important, I do not understand".

'That is why they are in prison right now. I am not doing this because it fits into my executive order, ' he said. This deal will make me look awful.

"I am the world's greatest person that does not want to let people into the country", Trump says.

"I hate having to do it, but I am still going to vet them very closely".

The Washington Post published transcripts of Trump's post-inauguration calls to Turnbull and Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto.

Republican Sens. John McCain and Bob Corker released statements affirming US support for Australia, while McCain phoned Australia's ambassador to stress the importance of the US-Australia alliance.

Trump, however refused. The 24-minute call ended with Turnbull thanking Trump for his commitment.

According to the transcript, on the phone with Turnball, Trump repeatedly talked about how bad it would look for him to issue an order restricting immigration then agree to take in "2,000 people that are actually imprisoned and that would actually come into the United States".

When Mr Trump claimed the agreement would in fact force the U.S. to accept 2000 refugees, Mr Turnbull responded: "With great respect, that is not right - It is not 2000". "It is very important to us".

Mr Turnbull: "There is nothing more important in business or politics than a deal is a deal".

He then went on to make clear that "Putin was a pleasant call". In it, the president remarks that Nieto speaks "beautifully", adding that he does not think he "can speak that beautifully".

In a similar exchange, he told Mr Trump: "You can certainly say that it was not a deal that you would have done, but you are going to stick with it".

The call ends shortly thereafter, with Turnbull reiterating, "You can count on me".

Trump responded by saying "I hope so" before thanking Turnbull and hanging up. "I will be there again and again".
