The road to watching this summer's solar eclipse starts in the library?

Ron Matthews | 04 August, 2017, 00:10

But not all states will be able to feast their eyes on the full eclipse. Boy, you are so wrong. A total solar eclipse only occurs when the sun is completely obstructed by the moon and is the only brief time it is safe to view the sun's corona (atmosphere) without eye protection. This is called a partial solar eclipse, and it isn't almost as impressive as the view of a totally eclipsed sun within the umbra. The total solar eclipse will turn day to night and drop temperatures by as much as 25 degrees Fahrenheit.

Here are the steps you must take, according to NASA. More than two million eclipse glasses will be given out free of charge by over 7,000 public libraries across the U.S. To find out if a library near you is participating in the giveaway program, which is being mounted with help from the National Center for Interactive Learning.

Most importantly, the library will provide eclipse glasses for those who wish to literally view the eclipse.

In Jefferson City, Missouri, the eclipse starts at 11:46 a.m. CDT and totality begins at 1:13 p.m. CDT, lasting for roughly 2 1/2 minutes. Homemade filters or ordinary sunglasses are not safe for looking at the sun, NASA warns. ABC News' Frank Reynolds anchored a special report on the celestial phenomenon at the time and pledged that the network would cover the next total solar eclipse in 2017.

Numerous organizations, including NASA, will be livestreaming the eclipse online for those of us indoor people. The following list are those states along its path and thus, most directly impacted: Oregon, Idaho, Wyoming, Nebraska, Kansas, Missouri, Illinois, Kentucky, Tennessee, Georgia, North Carolina, and SC. The path of totality will start in OR before making its way across the country; it will cut through 14 states in total, finally finishing up in SC.

Similarly, do not look at the sun through a camera, a telescope, binoculars, or any other optical device while using your eclipse glasses or hand-held solar viewer - the concentrated solar rays will damage the filter and enter your eye (s), causing serious injury.

Here's the Earth. Here's the moon.

At its heart, a solar eclipse is what happens when the moon slips between the Earth and the sun, blocking out the light from our closest star by casting a long shadow onto our planet.

The result is that the sun and the moon appear to be the same size from our perspective.

NASA marks out the path of the August 21 solar eclipse.
