Food officials: 700K pesticide-contaminated eggs sent to Britain

France orders national investigation amid Europe tainted egg scandal Fipronil: EU Egg Scandal Affected More Eggs In Britain Than Previously Thought

A spokeswoman for the prosecutor in Belgium's northern port city of Antwerp said in a statement: "In connection with the fipronil case, several raids are now being carried out".

The scandal also spread eastwards on Thursday as a tonne of contaminated egg yolk was found in Romania, and 21 boxes of the tainted eggs were discovered in Slovakia.

Millions of eggs have been recalled across Europe after the insecticide was used as a cleaning product on some European Union farms, despite not being authorised for use near food-producing animals.

According to officials, it may have been added to disinfectant in some chicken farms.

The eggs at the centre of the scandal have mainly come from the Netherlands, followed by Belgium and Germany.

On Thursday, Dutch police arrested two individuals they say could be accountable for allowing the insecticide Fipronil to be used inside Dutch poultry farms, causing millions of potentially contaminated eggs to be taken off European shelves.

The Danish food administration have asked people to keep calm as they claim that eating the eggs bought by Danæg Products poses no risk in human consumption.

The FSA admitted that "some of the products made from these eggs will have had a short shelf life and will have already been consumed, " but withdrew a list of over a dozen products - sandwiches and salads - from leading retailers Sainsbury's, Morrisons, Waitrose and Asda.

Numerous eggs were mixed with others which had not come from affected farms so Fipronil residues would be highly diluted, the FSA said.

Two people have been arrested in connection with the latest food scandal to hit Europe, Dutch prosecutors said.

More than 100 poultry farms were closed during the investigation and at least 26 suspects were identified.

Qatar does not import eggs from the Netherlands and its products are thus contaminant-free and safe to eat, the local health ministry has said.

"I proposed to hold a high-level meeting gathering the ministers concerned as well as the representatives of the food safety agencies in all member states involved as soon as we have all the facts available", he said in a statement.

Millions of eggs have been pulled from stores in Belgium, the Netherlands and Germany, while Britain, France, Sweden and Switzerland have been warned that contaminated eggs might be on their territories.

The Food Safety Authority has confirmed that a small amount of contaminated Dutch eggs were supplied to Irish food businesses.

.

The raids in the Netherlands were carried out as part of a joint action with Belgian authorities.
