Kenyatta re-elected as President : Kenya elections

Uhuru Kenyatta wins second term as Kenyan president Kenya: incumbent Uhuru Kenyatta declared winner of general election
Lance Thomas | 15 August, 2017, 00:12

Kenya's President Uhuru Kenyatta has been re-elected into power following Tuesday's election, officials say.

The dead includes a nine-year-old girl, while nearly 100 people more have been injured, Despite Mr Odinga's claims, which he has not provided evidence for, Kenya's election commission said the process for the vote won by incumbent Uhuru Kenyatta was fair.

The opposition, in asking for access to the election commission's servers, earlier said it will accept the results even if they show Kenyatta won.

The UN scribe had also noted the announcement of the results of the presidential election by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission, which declared Uhuru Kenyatta as President-elect.

The announcement was met with celebrations in the strongholds of Mr Kenyatta's party, Jubilee, and protests amongst some Odinga's National Super Alliance (NASA) supporters.

Kenya's opposition leader Raila Odinga vowed on Sunday not to back down over an election he claims was stolen from him and urged his supporters to boycott work until he announces his strategy next week.

U.S. ambassador Robert F Godec said any disputes should be dealt with through legal channels. It is my hope that during your second term in office, we shall continue to work together towards strengthening the friendly relations between our two nations. "Kenyans want us to succeed". Like in any competition, there is a loser and a victor.

Residents of Nairobi slums, and in the western city of Kisumu, threw rocks at police and burned tyres, while officers responded with tear gas and in some cases, live ammunition. I would like to thank all our supporters, staff, politicians, men and women who fought gallantly. To our competitors, we are not enemies.

The dispute led to a spate of ethnic violence that led to the death of 1,200 people and displaced some 600,000.

However, Mr Odinga's brother Oburu said Saturday that the government appears to be targeting "particular communities in this country".

Another top opposition official, James Orengo, said the coalition would not be taking its issues to court, raising the spectre of street protests.

Friday claimed that the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission was declaring the victor of the presidential vote in total disregard of their concerns.
