HPE's Whitman Is 'On The Fence' For Uber CEO Job

Expedia's Dara Khosrowshahi as new CEO of Uber I have decided not to pursue leadership position at Uber: Jeff Immelt
Preston Stone | 28 August, 2017, 00:39

"I have enormous respect for the company & founders - Travis, Garrett and Ryan", Immelt tweeted Sunday.

Supposedly, Uber is anxious not just about criticism of Immelt's time at GE (his performance there was mixed), but also former CEO Travis Kalanick's eagerness to have Immelt take his old position.

Benchmark, a notable venture capital firm and Uber investor, isn't confident that Immelt can tame Uber's co-founder and former CEO Travis Kalanick, Recode reported.

An HPE spokesman reached Sunday by CRN once again reiterated Whitman's strong statement that she will not be the next Uber CEO. The slate of candidates had narrowed to three people, according to people with knowledge of the process.

GE's former chief Jeff Immelt has decided not to pursue Uber's top spot despite reports that he was in the lead, leaving two candidates for the role: Meg Whitman, the chief executive of Hewlett Packard Enterprise, and another finalist, whose identity is unknown.

Uber's eight-member board is expected to vote later on Sunday on the firm's new leader. Times reporter Mike Isaac tweeted that Immelt pulled out to save face because he didn't have the necessary support from Uber's board.

Representatives for Uber, Benchmark and Immelt declined to comment.

The ride-hailing giant, valued at about $70 billion, faces a lawsuit over self-driving vehicle technology from Alphabet Inc.'s Waymo and a USA probe into the use of software to deceive law enforcement officials.

Uber's quest for a new chief executive to succeed Travis Kalanick has taken another twist after one of America's most senior corporate figures ruled himself out. Kalanick was embroiled in scandals involving the mishandling of an Indian woman's medical records and a verbal altercation with an Uber driver.

The new chief executive will have to reform the company's workplace culture following accusations of sexual discrimination and harassment, recruit new executives including a chief financial officer and chief operating officer, and deal with numerous legal wrangles. "I am fully committed to HPE and plan to remain the company's CEO". Others wanted to make another run at Whitman or keep searching. He recently stepped down as GE CEO, but remains the chairman through the end of this year.
