The bill, sponsored by Republican Senators Bill Cassidy and Lindsay Graham, aimed to eliminate key portions of Obamacare, including the system whereby citizens are fined if they do not obtain health insurance and government subsidies are provided to insurers to expand Medicaid.

A last-ditch attempt by US President Donald Trump and Senate Republicans to dismantle Obamacare collapsed as a third GOP senator has announced her opposition and left the proposal short of the votes needed to pass. Bill Cassidy, of Louisiana and Lindsey Graham, of SC.

She joined Sen. John McCain, R-Arizona, Sen.

Paul also railed against the bill, describing it as "Obamacare lite".

Several Republicans blamed defeat on the rushed and secretive process as they scrambled to meet a September 30 deadline with just one public hearing and said that a more thorough debate would produce legislation that could win support.

While announcing the demise of the current bill, Republican leaders vowed that they will come back to healthcare once they complete tax overhaul, a task made more hard by their inability to repeal and replace ObamaCare. 30 deadline-after which Republicans would need an impossible 60 votes to pursue further action. If we can't do it in a reconciliation vehicle this year, then maybe it's the 2019 [budget].

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Kentucky, said that the GOP will now move forward with their next priority, which is tax reform.

Rejection became all but inevitable Monday after Maine GOP Sen.

Some Republicans are of the view that heathcare and tax reform can be taken up during 2018 budget.

The Senate Democrats Facebook page said the event was held "to thank everyone for their work in this latest healthcare fight and to talk about our plan for a bipartisan solution to lower premiums and stabilize the health insurance markets".

During a news conference Tuesday, McConnell said the fight to change the health care system is not over. "Both are largely identified with ending Obama's signature health care law, including the individual mandate which punishes those who do not buy insurance, the employer mandate which discourages small businesses from expanding and providing states additional freedom against the federalization of health insurance". According to CNN, McConnell made a decision to cancel the vote after meeting with the Senate Republicans and taking stock of where his colleagues were leaning.

On Monday night, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) said on the Senate floor, "To Sen. We go and we do reform that's common sense, and we don't care about the politics".

He called the vote postponement a "disappointment": "To those who will celebrate the fact that we won't have that vote just yet, think of those families of three making 401 percent of federal poverty level, those states, and those patients in those non- expansion states".
