Elgar misses double century before Bangladesh suffer early losses

No further reward came the home team's way, and Saturday will demand more hard work from them if they are to ensure a substantial lead - which now stands at 369 runs - on the first innings.

Although opening bowlers Kagiso Rabada and Morne Morkel both took a wicket, Elgar said they had wasted too many deliveries.

None of the seamers looked threatening and Hasan ended up bowling 36 overs, including two with the second new ball, conceding 101 runs.

Elgar has previously had alliances with Stephen Cook and Heino Kuhn, although there is no truly brazen stroke-player between those three, all being willing grafters above most other considerations.

South Africa need to give some serious thought to Elgar's continued stay in the slips - especially for the spinner. His opening partner, debutant Aiden Markram, had been run out 97 on the first day.

Elgar, who made 199, said: "We are in quite a strong position but our bowlers didn´t really hit their straps, especially with the new ball".

Elgar admitted culpability for twice dropping Bangladesh captain Mushfiqur Rahim off left-arm spinner Keshav Maharaj. According to Elgar, speaking after the day's play, it was not a deliberate tactic with the absence of Bangladesh's highest run-scorer in mind.

"For me‚ it is important that he doesn't listen too much to the things that are being said out there about him".

After cameos from Temba Bavuma and Faf du Plessis bulked up the total, the hosts declared. The declaration meant that Tamim could not open the innings for the first time in his 52-Test career nor bat until 49 minutes had elapsed in Bangladesh's innings, therefore exposing Liton Das - who had kept wickets for 146 overs - to the makeshift openers' role.

Tamim (22) finally came to the wicket and he and Monimul (28*) moved the score to 127 with the latter hitting the final ball of the day for six.

Back in his 1974 debut against India in Bengaluru, now 66-year-old Greenidge (108 Tests in total to 1991, 7,558 runs at nearly 45) made up for the first-knock non-century disappointment by blitzing to the landmark in the second innings, where he registered 107. "I would have loved to see Aiden get a hundred in his first Test innings and I am still angry about it". It´s what you play for and it´s a massive milestone for me. I think it's been a year or two since the last double hundred was scored or an innings of substance.

The run out was the closest Bangladesh came to taking a wicket as their attack posed few problems on a pitch, that apart for some uneven bounce, was ideal for batting. "We didn´t bowl very well", he said. "The negative is that we didn´t get enough wickets".
