David Cassidy is "conscious and surrounded by family", his spokeswoman says after the 1970s pop icon was admitted to hospital for organ failure earlier in the week.

A representative for David told Express.co.uk: "He was in an induced coma but he is now conscious and surrounded by family".

"He is in the hospital and it's not looking good", a source told E!

According to TMZ, David Cassidy, 67, is in an induced coma in a critical condition. No additional details were provided. Cassidy's health has been in decline for more than two months, and his family has been told to prepare for the worst.

Earlier this year, the actor announced that he planned to retire from touring, and later revealed to People that he's battling dementia.

After the show ended in 1974, he focused on recording and songwriting but continued to act in smaller roles.

Cassidy has had numerous personal problems in the decades following his debut, ranging from substance abuse to bankruptcy.
