Arab League states condemn Hezbollah as 'terrorist organization'

Speaking at the meeting Saudi Arabia's Foreign Minister Adel Jubeir said his country "will not stand by and will not hesitate to defend its security" in the face of Iranian "aggression".

In a statement attributed to Iraqi Foreign Ministry spokesperson Ahmed Mahjoub, Baghdad said Monday the parts of the Arab League resolution that referred to Hezbollah as a terrorist organization were "inconsistent with the clear and absolute Iraqi position in defining terrorism realistically and accurately".

They said they planned to "brief" the U.N. Security Council on Iran's destabilizing policies in the region, particularly its support for Shiite rebels in Yemen, with a view to submit at a later stage an anti-Iran Arab resolution. Hariri cited Iran and Hezballah for meddling in regional affairs and expressed fear of a plot to assassinate him.

The Arab ministers Sunday called the firing of the missile an "aggression" against Saudi Arabia and a "threat to the Arab and global security".

Saudi Arabia, a Sunni powerhouse, has significantly sharpened its anti-Iran rhetoric since its forces on November 4 intercepted near its capital, Riyadh, a ballistic missile fired by Shiite rebels in Yemen who are allied with the Iranians.

Hezbollah is a partner to Lebanon's coalition government.

Some of the threats that Jubeir mentioned include the Iranian threat to Arab national security, the fights against terrorism, the Syrian crisis, Libya, Yemen's stability, internal development, implementing Vision 2030 in Saudi Arabia and reform.

Ghassemi also described the Arab League´s statement as "untrue" and urged Saudi Arabia to "immediately stop its savage aggression against the Yemeni Arab people" and "stop its pressure on Lebanon, Qatar and the entire region".

Iraqi Foreign Minister Ibrahim Al-Jaafari also did not attend the meeting.

The Arab League accused Hezballah of "supporting terrorism and extremist groups in Arab countries with advanced weapons and ballistic missiles", in its declaration. He alleged, "Iranian threats have gone beyond all limits and pushed the region into a unsafe abyss".

Iranian forces have played a key role in backing the regime of Syrian President Bashar Al-Assad in its war against the rebels and ISIS.

Saudi Minister for Gulf Affairs Thamer al-Sabhan has warned the Lebanese they must choose "either peace, or to live within the political fold of Hezbollah".

The minister said this contrasted with a Saudi meeting with the Arab League in Cairo, during which the kingdom demanded a hard line against Tehran. PM Saad Hariri, a Sunni leader belongs to Future Movement.

According to Marwan Bishara, a senior political analyst has said that Saudi Arabia had convened the Cairo meeting in a bid to "consolidate its position in a divided Arab region".

Hizbollah, which was formed by Iran's Revolutionary Guards and still receives financial and militarily assistance from Tehran, fought Israel's occupation of Lebanon in the early 1980s.
