The Japan-based 7th Fleet says in a statement that the search and rescue operation has been launched from the carrier.
A US Navy aircraft carrying 11 crew and passengers has crashed into the sea off the coast of Japan.
The search continues for three missing personnel.
Eight people were rescued about 40 minutes later.
The incident occurred around 2.45pm local time (00:45am EST) and recovery is underway.
The cause of the crash wasn't immediately known.
"The Maritime Self-Defense Force is now searching with USA forces", Japanese Defense Minister Itsunori Onodera said, according to public broadcaster NHK.
It was flying to aircraft carrier USS Ronald Reagan in the Philippine Sea, when it crashed around 2:45 p.m. Japan time. Japan's Defence Ministry said the crash site is about 150km northwest of Okinotorishima, a Japanese atoll.
"From the USA military, we have received an initial report that engine trouble might be the cause", he said.
According to a statement from the Navy, the names of the crew and passengers who were onboard are being withheld pending the notification of their next of kin. "Prayers for all involved".
The White House and President Donald Trump have yet to comment on the matter.
