As Breitbart News reported, the office released a report that showed between fiscal year 1997 and fiscal year 2017 some $17 million had been handed out as settlements to individuals or groups of individuals who filed a variety of charges against members of Congress or staff, including sexual harassment claims.

Rep. John Conyers, Michigan Democrat, stepped aside Sunday from his ranking position on the House Judiciary Committee while the House ethics committee investigates allegations of sexual harassment.

The House Ethics Committee is investigating allegations involving Conyers after BuzzFeed reported that Conyers office paid $27,000 to a former female staffer who alleged that she was sacked after rebuffing his sexual advances.

"After careful consideration and in light of the attention drawn by recent allegations made against me, I have notified the Democratic Leader of my request to step aside as Ranking Member of the House Judiciary Committee during the investigation of these matters", Conyers said in a statement Sunday.

"To be clear, I would like very much to remain as Ranking Member", he said.

The House Ethics Committee announced last week that it had launched an investigation into the allegations of sexual harassment and age discrimination against Conyers involving his staff.

Judiciary Committee's ranking member, pending the outcome of the ethics probe. In that lawsuit, Buzfeed reported, the woman also said Conyers' wife, Monica Conyers, accused the woman of wanting to have an affair with her husband.

Speaking on NBC's Meet the Press prior to Conyers' announcement on Sunday, House Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi called for "due process" before issuing a penalty over the allegations. The congressman said the payment was comparable to a severance package and denies the allegations against him.

Sloan tells the Freep Conyers once criticized her for not wearing stockings and another time ordered her backstage from a committee hearing on crime she had organized in New York City to babysit one of his children.

"We are strengthened by due process". Just because someone is accused - was it one accusation or is it two?

Pelosi continued that she was confident Conyers would "do the right thing" as his case is reviewed, but stopped short of referencing resignation.
