Now possible with SpaceX's Falcon Heavy

Mike Hodges | 21 February, 2018, 03:25

SpaceX enjoyed great success when the company successfully launched its most anticipated and most powerful operational rocket up to now - the Falcon Heavy.

According to the post by SpaceX, more time is necessary in order to "perform final checkouts of upgraded fairing".

The booster is a recycled Falcon 9 that flew another mission before being strapped to the side of Falcon Heavy for its historic flight earlier this month.

On Wednesday, the Falcon 9's payload fairing will be the PAZ satellite.

SpaceX is slated to launch a rocket from a pad at California's Vandenberg Air Force Base at 6:17 a.m. local time on Wednesday.

The fairing costs $6 million to produce, and so re-using it for multiple costs could lead to a significantly reduction in how much each launch individually costs SpaceX.

Launching things into space is cost-prohibitive, to say the least.

With Mr. Steven, SpaceX is hoping to develop a more efficient solution to retrieving payload fairings. They also will conduct further testing of the rocket's fairing, which is the section at the tip of the rocket which costs $5 million and deploys the rocket's payload, according to a report in Space.com.

SpaceX's Dragon 2 capsule was used by NASA to send cargo to the International Space Station. The launch's primary mission is to deliver an observational satellite, called PAZ, for the Spanish government.

The payload fairings are clam shell-like nose cone halves that protect the craft's payload.

As SpaceX prepares to launch another Falcon 9 rocket on Wednesday, the firm also won an endorsement last week from the top US communications regulator to build a broadband network using satellites. There are also a couple of prototype satellites aboard - called Microsat-2a and Microsat-2b - that'll be part of a constellation of satellites called Starlink to beam superfast internet from space.
