Apple CEO Tim Cook Rips Facebook: 'Privacy Is a Human Right'

Apple CEO Tim Cook has long shared his concerns about Facebook and Google's data-harvesting business model, but in the wake of the Cambridge Analytica data breach scandal he is saying enough's enough.

If they wanted to, Apple could make plenty of money by monetizing the customer, Cook said Wednesday with MSNBC's Chris Hayes and Swisher. He follows that with: "We've elected not to do that".

In an interview today to MSNBC and Recode that will air on April 6, the CEO of a company that has always been applauded for its focus on user privacy and security (with some hiccups) said that it's probably too late for Facebook to be self-regulated. "I wouldn't be in this situation", he said.

"We're not doing the beauty contest", Cook said. "It's a civil liberty, and in something that is unique to America, this is like freedom of speech and freedom of the press and privacy is right up there for us".

While Apple has its own critics, Cook's criticism of Facebook is line with how Apple has operated in the past with regards to protecting user data. "I do think it's time that a set of people think deeply about what can be done".

And when Cook was asked what he would do if he were in Zuckerberg's shoes amid all this controversy, Apple's chief executive was incredibly direct.

"This case is about much more than a single phone or a single investigation, so when we received the government's order we knew we had to speak out", Cook said in an email to employees in February 2016.

The reason, according to the 57-year-old exec, is because Apple's business is fundamentally different from the ad-driven juggernaut built by the social network. Will Ferrell - who has 10 million followers - took to the platform on Tuesday to tell his fans that he would be deleting his account on Friday.

Just days earlier, Cook criticized Facebook for their ostensible lack of care when it comes to users' data, specifically the partnership it had with Cambridge Analytica - the analytics firm that worked with President Donald Trump's campaign.

Facebook is in crisis.
