Twitter is updating its privacy policy in a move to be more transparent with users, ahead of new regulatory guidelines on European data privacy laws, which go into effect next month. Users will be asked to confirm their age when prompted to agree to new terms of service within the next few weeks.

The soon-to-be-implemented EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) will facilitate more control over how companies manage user information, which the user can now elect to erased.

In a blog post, the platform wrote, "Our goal is simply to explain how we use and protect the limited information we have about you".

If you live in a country in the European Region, you must be at least 16 years old to use WhatsApp. The minimum age will remain 13 for the rest of the world.

Facebook itself will continue to have a separate data policy under the new law, and in terms of the age requirement, it is taking a slightly different approach.

Soon, Europe's GDPR privacy standards will launch.

It is asking them to nominate a parent or guardian to give permission for them to share information on the platform, otherwise they will not see a fully personalised version of the social media platform.

The majority of those 87 million are based in the United States but 1,079,031 UK users have had their data shared improperly, the tech company said. "As we have said in the past, we want to work closer with other Facebook companies in the future and we will keep you updated as we develop our plans", it said. Basically, these rules say that services which collect data from users should have more restrictive privacy settings concerning personal information by default and additional collection of data should all be opt-in features and not the current opt-out situation. The app's verification process to monitor the European Union users is not yet known.
