Poland coach Adam Nawalka blamed a plan gone awry and a "curious" goal for his side's lacklustre 2-1 defeat by Senegal in their Group H opener.

Senegal took the lead in the first half following an own-goal from Thiago Cionek during the 37th minute.

Senegal opened the score board in the 38th minute via an own goal by Thiago Cionek, who deflected Idris Gaye's shot into the net.

Senegal doubled the lead when M'Baye Niang took advantage of a mix-up between Grzegorz Krychowiak and Wojciech Szczesny to finish easily as Niang returned to the pitch from an injury.

Instead, the speedy Mbaye Niang got in front of his defender, nicked the ball away from Szczesny and rolled it into the empty net.

Grzegorz Krychowiak headed home from a free kick at the 86th minute to make it 2-1.

The World Cup group stage continues when Poland takes on Senegal in a Group H showdown.

Cisse, who captained Senegal on their fairytale journey through the 2002 World Cup in Japan and South Korea, believes it was important for his side to win after other African representatives disappointed.

But while the Senegal first was unlucky for Poland, they were architects of their own downfall for the decisive second, handing Niang his first worldwide goal on the hour mark.

Senegal started the stronger team with Aliou Cisse's men keen to break down the wings at any given opportunity.

Senegal won their first 2018 FIFA World Cup game against Poland.

Despite Krychowiak's late reply, Poland never really looked like snatching a point and must now pick themselves up for the match against Colombia on Sunday.

The video on social media has brought a lot of praise for the Senegalese team as they stayed humble despite victory in their encounter.

At the beginning of the match, both teams kept the ball in the midfield, with none of the sides getting a shot off in the first five minutes. I hope Egypt, Nigeria, Tunisia and Morocco will stand up.

Senegal will led by West Ham midfielder Cheikhou Kouyate but all eyes will be on forward Sadio Mane, who is coming into the World Cup off the back of a trailblazing season with Liverpool, also scoring in the UEFA Champions League final.

"We didn't get any good forward balls to do anything with, and instead concentrated on keeping the ball at the back and keeping possession". Following that, various efforts were made by the side to find an equaliser.

"We knew their systems. we knew exactly how this team was going to move and that Lewandowski was their main threat, and we implemented the right system to play them".
