The Pentagon tests the rocket, the Falcon Heavy

SpaceX's Falcon Heavy rocket gets Air Force certification A SpaceX Falcon Heavy rocket lifts off from Kennedy Space Center in Cape Canaveral Fla. in February

The service's space and missile systems center received two proposals for the contract and will obligate the full contract amount using its space procurement funds for fiscal 2018. The contract, which cost the Air Force $130 million, is actually a much smaller sum than the average cost to launch ULA's Delta IV.

The military launch is presently scheduled to occur in September 2020 from Kennedy Space Center in Florida.

UAL has maintained a monopoly on military space contracts for several years, until SpaceX first started giving them a run for their money in 2016, when it landed its first military contract.

Although SpaceX had to wait two years to get the Falcon 9 certified, it seems that the rocket's more than 50 flights, coupled with the great results from the Falcon Heavy flight test, was enough to warrant certification by the USAF.

SpaceX has won the tender of the Pentagon on the launch to near-earth space satellites for military purposes AFSPC-52, and orbit will be his recently debuted heavy rocket Falcon Heavy.

"SpaceX is honored by the Air Force's selection of Falcon Heavy to launch the competitively-awarded AFSPC-52 mission", stated SpaceX President and Chief Operating Officer Gwynne Shotwell. These launch service contract awards strike a balance between meeting operational needs and lowering launch costs through reintroducing competition for National Security Space missions.

According to SpaceX, the rocket delivered on its mission flawlessly.

Who knew the Falcon 9 rocket is as tall as a 21-story building? The company is the prime contractor on a NASA project called the Space Launch System (SLS) that would enable exploratory missions into deep space.

As reported by the Inquisitr, the Falcon Heavy is 230 feet tall and 40 feet wide, and its first stage basically incorporates three Falcon 9 rockets strapped together.

This is the first classified national security payload, or NSS payload, award for SpaceX's new Falcon Heavy.

SpaceX and Boeing are competing head-to-head as both firms work to build spacecrafts capable of ferrying humans to the moon and beyond.
