Uruguay's Diego Godin holds the key to locking out Cristiano Ronaldo

FIFA World Cup 2018 Uruguay v/s Portugal match will take place on Saturday, June 30.

Uruguay captain Diego Godin is the leader of the only defence yet to concede a goal in the World Cup and the Atletico Madrid defender's wealth of experience in facing Cristiano Ronaldo will come in handy in his side's last 16 clash with Portugal.

Hello and welcome to the live coverage of Round of 16 match between Uruguay and Portugal.

Godin, focusing his attention on Ronaldo, got sucked underneath the ball, allowing Pepe to steal in at the far post and head home Raphael Guerreiro's corner.

It was not for lack of trying as Ronaldo attempted six shots in the contest, which was one more than Uruguay as a team had on the evening.

There has been little love lost when they have met: Ronaldo once punched Godin during a Spanish Super Cup tie, but the defender got his own back in a meeting past year by elbowing the Portuguese in the head.

How Godin and Gimenez fare against Ronaldo is one of the intriguing subplots surrounding this fixture, though both sides' defensive records have some fearing a boring contest. A beauty of a passing display led to an early Edinson Cavani goal that put them up 1-0. Meanwhile, three of Portugal's last four goals have come from outside the box.

Cristiano Ronaldo can not beat Uruguay all by himself.

Since 1966, only Grzegorz Lato & Andrzej Szarmach (five for Poland) and Michael Ballack and Miroslav Klose (five for Germany) have combined for more World Cup goals than Uruguay's Edinson Cavani and Luis Suarez (4).

While Ronaldo got off to a fast start in Russian Federation, scoring a hat-trick in Portugal's 3-3 opening draw with Spain, and the victor in a 1-0 victory over Morocco, he continued and unfortunate tradition against Uruguay of failing to score in the knockout rounds of the World Cup. They are very good at the back, have a couple of excellent forwards and they go from there. I've told them they need to be calm.
